Fire Department Conducts Citizens' Fire Academy

Did you miss the deadline for the last Fort Worth Fire Department Citizens' Fire Academy? Fort Worth residents ages 19 and up may apply to attend the 2006 session. Academy courses are one evening a week, for 10 weeks, at the Fire & Police Training Center, 1000 Calvert St..

Purpose of the academy is to increase participants' knowledge on fire safety and to provide an in-depth understanding of the Fort Worth Fire Department. The training program consists of classroom and practical instruction. Instruction is comprehensive and, each week, highlights a different area of the department, taught by firefighters with expertise in their respective specialty fields. The program involves hands-on activities and field trips to fire stations and other Fire facilities.

Topics will include:

  • Firefighter Selection Process & Training Station
  • Fire Safety Education
  • Fire Alarm Office & Supply
  • Marine Rescue
  • Prevention & Code Enforcement
  • Office of Emergency Management
  • Fire Investigation
  • Technical Rescue
  • Airport/Aircraft Rescue
  • Hazardous Materials (HazMat)
  • First Aid & Automated External Defibrillator Training
  • American Heart Association CPR Certification.

The next Academy class is tentatively scheduled for March 2006.

For more information or to submit an application, call Fire Safety Education at 817-871-6862. Graduates of the Citizens Fire Academy are not commissioned firefighters. They do, however, become more familiar with the operation of the Fort Worth Fire Department and participate in alumni activities.
